Settle in NZ in 12 Weeks

Again, komon-sens.

3. Disposal of Assets – habang ikaw ay nasa NZ at naghahanap ng work, ang esposo/esposa mo naman ay nasa Pinas para magbenta ng iyong mga ari-arian.

Bago ka lumipad papuntang NZ, i ready mo din ang Philippine Driver's License mo (make sure hindi expired) at kumuha ka ng certification mula sa car insurance mo certifying that you have not made any claims in the last 3 years. Ituloy mo ang pagbabasa at malalaman mo ang dahilan.

Eto ang aking suggested timetable showing the milestones and possible activities for you every week for 12 weeks.

WEEK 1
First few days, mag-adjust ka muna.

IRD Number - Pero para naman may masabi kang accomplishment mo sa unang linggo, make it your goal to apply for an IRD Number (Inland Revenue Department) in the first week. You can download the application form from the IRD website, print it and fill it up. Then mail it to Inland revenue together with a xerox copy of your passport. It should take only a few days to get your IRD number.

WEEK 2:
This can be very handy. You can’t expect your host to drive you every time to your destination. It’s also one of the best ways to familiarize yourself of the area.

Buy a newspaper and go to the classified ads section. Browse for prospective jobs. Continue doing this until you find a job. Also try searching websites for prospectrive jobs. Usually, you should be able to just email them your CV. So wala naman gastos.

WEEK 3:
Open a bank account - By this time you should have received your IRD number from the mail. Once you have an IRD number you should be able to open a bank account.

WEEK 4
Get a copy of the NZ Road Code – isa itong libro na mabibili sa mga bookstore or gas stations nandito ang mga rules ng pag-drive dito sa NZ. Basahin mo ito at pag-aralan.

WEEKS 5,6
Buy a Car – mahirap ang walang sariling wheels. Try to find a car for less than $5,000. If you are able to use this car for 1 to 2 years, that should be good enough. It is not worth it to buy an expensive car during your first year. Remember you are allowed to use your Philippine Driver’s License for 12 months. Kailangan mo ring ipa-insure ang sasakyan mo. Makakakuha ka ng at least 50% discount sa premium mo, kapag may certificate ka from your insurance company na hindi ka nag-claim in the last 3 years. See my previous post about owning a car in NZ.

Call a driving school. It’s worth it to take a few lessons.

WEEKS 7,8
During this time you should be busy applying for jobs, attending job interviews or just waiting for prospective employers to give you a call. Be patient. Get a list of possible employers from the telephone directory and even if they have not advertised an opening, give them a call or just walked in to their HR office and tell them you’re looking for a job. Don’t be afraid to be turned down. You have to find your own luck. Hindi ka hahanapin ng swerte. Sceintifically speaking, luck is just a statistical chance. The more chances you have, the higher the probability of success. So it’s up to you to increase your chances.

Attend a Filipino mass on Sunday. Even if you are not Catholic, tiempuhan mo kapag tapos na ang misa. After the mass maraming nagbebenta ng mga Filipino foods. It’s your chance para makipagkilala sa ibang Pinoy. You never know baka may alam na job opening ang makilala mo. It happened to my friend.

But there are other considerations, like schools, cost of rental, crime rate in the area, etc. Sa rental ng flat usually you’ll be required to pay 2 weeks rent in advance, 2 weeks bond, then baka may letting fee pa na 1 week. Kaya total 5 weeks rent kaagad ang kailangan mong ibayad. You should have a rental agreement in writing with the landlord. Before you move in sa flat, note down the water meter and electric meter readings with the landlord. This is for your protection para hindi ka i-overcharge later. You can also search for flats through the web. This is one site.

Then you need to call the electric company (parang Meralco sa atin) to open an account for them and tell them the electric meter reading. Yung water usually ang landlord ang bahala so you don’t need to call the water company.

WEEKS 11,12

Good luck!

  • Hello po ulit. Very informative po ito...but may I add something RE: finding a Pinoy Host.Just be sure na wag lang sila mag-abuso and do not expect too much form the host - dahil yung patirhan ka for a week is a big thing already. From experience po kasi - nakakatakot, masyado ang expectation - so beforehand be sure to level-off expectations with the host - iladlad mo na ang baraha e.g. - ilang days makikitira, ang budget, etc. Tendency po kasi ng mga Pinoy na nasa Pinas, since andito na tayo - WE ALREADY MADE IT. So since andito na tayo and have established ourselves a bit - mega tulong na tayo and they have the right na KUMUHA ng tulong from us. Kaya nakakadala talaga. Pero as on old saying goes, clouds do have its silver lining...meron naman po akong mga talagang naging good friends sa pagtulong ko - sila yung mga VERY CONSIDERATE na tao.

A piece of my brain po.

Good idea yung pumunta sa Filipino Mass.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:44 AM, April 26, 2005

  • Ronald,
But compared to other countries I've been to, NZ is definitely a very nice place to raise a family and retire in the future.

If I may suggest that maybe at least one of you to come and visit NZ first to help you decide kung saan talaga nyo gustong mag-settle. siguro, isa sa inyo pumunta dito at mag-try humanap ng trabaho, bago sumunod ang iba. mahirap kasing sabihin maganda dito, kung later wala naman kayong makuhang trabaho, di ba?

you can apply for PR, regardless of whether you'll settle here or not. medyo may gastos nga lang. pero at least you have an option later in the future, for yourself or your children's. as far as i know, once you get a PR, you have 12 months to decide to come here or not.

  • First off....I'd like to thank you for this very informative blog site...Secondly, tanong ko lang po kung ano ang options ng mga walang kamag-anak o kaibigan sa NZ (walang prospective host)...thanks...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 5:37 PM, May 19, 2005

  • hi anonymous,

God always provide. huwag kang magalala.

if worse come to worst at wala kang matuluyan, email mo ako. if i can't help personally, baka may ma-irefer ako.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:46 AM, May 25, 2005

  • foo, pwede yang iniisip mo. may post ako tungkol diyan. http://a-pinoy-in-nz.blogspot.com/2005/03/isang-paraan-ng-pagpunta-sa-nz.html

Very informative and blog mo... marami kang natutulungan dahil dito.

Same lang ba yung "Be a Skilled Migrant" dun sa "Work to Residence in NZ"?

    thanks in advance

By Blogger Charmed, at 2:40 PM, August 12, 2005

  • charmed,
pareho lang yon. both will lead you to getting a PR (permanent residence) as a skilled migrant. yung WTR (work to residence) parang probationary PR na pwedeng ibigay sa applicant. kaya probationary kasi pwede kang pumunta sa nz at may permit ka para maghanap ng work. once you get a job offer pwede mo itong isubmit sa immigration at automatically bibigyan ka na ng PR provided yung job related sa field mo.

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 2:54 PM, August 12, 2005

  • Ka Uro,
Thank you so much talaga sa mga tips and information. I have almost given up hope in pursuing my plan to take my chance in NZ. With what you shared, naenlighten ako. Magstart pa lang ako from step 1 ,that is, assessment and i am really hoping and praying maachieve ko ang dream ko of living in NZ with my family. More Power to you!

ipagpatuloy mo ang pag-apply. good luck!

    popoy,
sori di ko field yung food tech. better go to www.seek.co.nz para magka-idea ka kung may mga job openings sa field mo. yung question mo about "consultancy" ikaw din ang makaka-answer. try mo munang mag-isang mag-fill up ng EOI. if you're confident na tama ang pag-fill up mo baka di na kailangan ng consultant. try mo rin mag-join sa pinoy2nz yahoo group marami sa kanila ang katulad mo and situation para makakuha ka ng tips sa kanila. email mo sila sa pinoyz2nz@yahoogroups.com

  • Hello Ka Uro,

Magandang araw sa yo! Very helpful ang blog na ito.. Saludo ako sayo.. I always believe that to give more is to receive more.. kaya pala ganyan ka ka-successfull.. My friend forwarded this to me.. natuwa naman ako kasi, i'm sure this is a big help for me to go to NZ. (D2 po ako sa Phils. ngayon) Ka Uro, i have questions lang po, what if the university / school where i graduated doesn't belong to NZQA list, does this mean i can no longer acquire points from this category? i graduated at PUP Mla. with a 4-year degree course din naman. i'm more than 10 yrs na in my company right now and i'd like to try my luck there in NZ.. i'm half-way filling up the online EOI form.. and I feel sad when i can't find my school from NZQA list. i've also read it somewhere, if certain case like mine occurs, it would pass the assessment by nzqa first(??)(hope i got it right) how will i know if they recognize the said institution?? Ka Uro, my instinct told me you are the right person to ask.. hope you can enlighten me.. thank you so much in advance.. may God bless u more!

  • len, james and Flordeliz,
a lot of your questions are about the application process. iba kasi ang procedures nung kami ang nag-apply. so my knowledge in this area is lacking if not antiquated. the best people to answer your questions are those from pinoyz2nz. okay itong group na ito. mas marami kayong makukuhang info mula sa kanila. at wala pang bayad! hindi na ninyo kailangan ng consultant if you join their yahoo group, you won't regret it. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pinoyz2nz/

  • Hi!Ka Uro,

    Thank you po.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:41 PM, November 25, 2005

  • hi anonymous,

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 3:54 PM, November 25, 2005

    Salamat.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 9:53 PM, November 25, 2005

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 8:36 AM, November 26, 2005

  • Hello Ka Uro,

My name is Malou. I'm currently here in the philippines and currently employed in a hotel. Just would like to ask lang po sana kung marami bang job opportunities there for hoteliers like me?Gusto ko po sanang i-try ang luck ko there. How to go about it po ba?Katulad din po ba ng pag-aapply to have US or London visa na you really have to shell out big amount of money? Sana po matulungan ninyo ako.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 3:00 AM, January 28, 2006

  • malou,
maraming jobs dito sa mga hoteliers kasi very dynamic ang tourism ng nz. the first thing is for you to go to the nz immigration website www.immigration.govt.nz at basahin yung steps for applying as skilled migrant then sumali ka sa yahoo group pinoyz2nz http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pinoyz2nz/

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 9:50 AM, February 24, 2006

  • hi tess,
i cant see any problem with your qualifications. pwedeng-pwede ka na ikaw ang principal applicant. konting patience lang. minsan marami lang backlog ang bkk. there's a time for everything. god bless you too.

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 8:57 AM, April 06, 2006

  • hi karisa,
you may email me at (maurojean at yahoo dot com).
ok lang naman if you want to come here all at the same time. all i'm saying is be prepared. 1) saan kayo mag-stay? since 4 kayo, kahit may relative kayo dito, baka di kayo magkasya sa bahay. maliliit lang kasi houses dito. if you rent out a 2BR flat, that'll cost around $270 per week.

there are pros and cons of your decision whether mauna ka for a few weeks lang naman o sabay sabay kayo lahat.

only you can decide. but whatever your choice, mahirap pareho sa first couple of months.

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 9:36 AM, April 19, 2006

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 9:38 AM, April 19, 2006

  • Hi ka Uro. The information u unselfishly give to those who need such info is very impt. Thanks! I am also planning to go there! Actually I already have an invitation, work to residence visa. I am milling around to look for money and the like. May i just ask how much time I need to wait after submitting all the requirements and money to the embassy? I need it sir so that I will know what to do while I am still here. Another, is it okay if my driver's license is a mere sub-pro? I mean do they recognize a sub-pro driver's license? Thanks!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:28 PM, April 24, 2006

  • sorry i don't know how long it'll take before you get a visa. depends on the VO. as long as you have a valid license to drive a car there, that's valid here for 1 year.

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 7:17 PM, April 24, 2006

  • Ka Uro,

We got our ITA and our application was acknowledged already. The acknowledgement came from Pornjit Kunapakorn. Does anyone out there know how this VO works? Our imigration consultant was saying that whites are better than the Thais. Is there truth to it? Thanks.

  • hi ka Uro,

i do appreciated your concerns about migrating to NZ and its really gives us insight living there..
we are planning to fill up our EOI, since we are partner as boyfriend and girlfriend and we are not living together. how can we best prove our partnership? we prefer to stablish first before geting married..
    salamat po...

  • NZIS will ask for proof that you have a genuine and stable relationship as de facto partners. they'll ask for documents as evidence of this. for example, photos, letters, joint account bank statements, utility bills, joint ownership of properties, affidavits from other people. these are just examples. they might ask why your not living together if you are really in a de facto relationship. you should have a good answer for this.

  • This is my first time in pinoz2nz.how do i register as member?also,we just avail of a consultancy firm to help us in our appplication to go there.we just paid an initial payment. They forwarded our transcript of records to NZQA for assessment.our university is not included in the list however, they have already processed apllicants with the same school, and they passed..but this is not my concern as of now..After reading ur website,i begun to think, are we really better off than those who didnt avail of any agency?should we just drop the agency and apply on our own?cud you give us some advice.thanks.

  • hi anonymous,
go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/pinoyz2nz/ and click the JOIN button. you will be required to introduce yourself before your membership is approved. i'ld say once you become a Pinoyz2nz member you'll then find out the answer to your question about agencies. so mag-member ka na muna.

  • hi anonymous,

  • hi jeff,
bago ka mag-sign up with any consultant, mag-sign up ka muna with Pinoys2nz yahoo group. may link ako sa kanan. marami kang makukuhang info from members. mabilis pa silang mag-answer ng mga questions at most of all it's free.

  • hi!Ka Uro,
your blog site is very informative and helpful ,especially sa amin na nangangarap maging permanent residence sa NZ. ask ko lng po yun case nmin, ang expiration po ng WTR nmin ay sa Feb '2007 na ,currently i have a casual job pa lng and looking for a prmanent job. pwede ko po ba pasunurin d2 sa NZ ang husband & daughter ko sa Jan '2007 para lng matatakan yung visa nila b4 the expiration date then balik uli sila sa Pinas since wla pa me prmanent job. then ipapa-extend ko yung visa ko for another 6 months sa immigration (nabsa ko kc sa NZIS na pwede pa extend ng another 6 months). just incase na pwede, wla na po bang ibang documents na kailangan ng i-process bago sila bumalik ng pinas?
tnx ka Uro & more power....god bless

  • ang alam ko 3months lang ang binibigay na extension sa WTR at conditional pa yon. dapat may permanent job ka na related sa inaplayan mo sa yong EOI para mabigyan ka ng extension. i don't think it is a good idea na pasunurin ang pamilya mo sa jan 07 kung wala ka pang permanent job. i suggest you seek the advice your VO kung anong dapat mong gawin. you can listen to our advise but at the end of the day, nzis pa rin ang masusunod. so better get the advise directly from them. good luck

  • hi Ka Uro,
tnx po sa advice, additional question lng po...ask ko lng po yung condition na nakasaad sa work visa po nmin ,ano po ang ibig sabihin nito "The holder may work as unspecified for unspecified in New Zealand" does it mean na kahit ano job pwede kahit nde related sa field nmin?tama po ba? pls advise po...tnx and more power..

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:54 AM, November 28, 2006

  • yes kahit anong job legal kang mag-trabaho kung hindi mo ipapaconvert into PR ang iyong WTR. pero kung ipapaconvert mo into PR dapat related sa field mo.

  • Hi Ka Uro,

I am due for interview next week in Manila.

BTW, I am an IT person...can be an Oracle functional consultant? Meron po bang mga agencies dyan which I can coordinate for work na talagang IT related? Yon bang head-hunter na type?

    Regards and More power!

  • hi chris,
most advertisements for IT positions in www.seek.co.nz are already handled by agencies or head-hunters.

  • hi bembong,
sali kayo sa AKLNZPinoys or WLGNZPinoys depende kung sa auckland or wellington ang destination niyo. marami sa members ng group na yan ang pwedeng tumulong sa inyo with regards to accommodation.

By Blogger Ka Uro, at 7:38 AM, May 02, 2007

  • ka uro, first time visitor po, nag sign up din po ako sa auckland pinoy group. papunta na kami sa auckland this april & just like any migrant nag-iisip kong pano ba kami makakahanap ng work in a short period of time, considering the current economic situation. but still we are hoping for a good opportunity... sana po me makatulong. salamat

  • hi ka uro,

im really glad na may ganitong site, its very helpful!
ask ko lng sana kng totally walang matutuluyan as in lakasan lng ng loob pumunta jan as a tourist, may mkukuha ba kmeng work khet ano, stepping stone lng...? thanks a lot...

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 6:41 PM, May 05, 2009

  • hi anonymous,

Thanks a lot for posting blogs like this. It really helps us to have a broader idea of what it is like in dreaming for NZ. Gusto ko din ang New Zealand kaya naman I am applying now for a scholarship sa isang school doon and hopefully if pumasa, it will be a start for me na ituloy tuloy na ito hanggang sa matutunan ko ang pasikot sikot sa NZ so that I can stay there na someday. hehe
