My Filipino Dream

In America, if you have the skills, guts and determination and with hardwork you can become rich, multi-millionaire pa kung gusto mo. The nice thing about the American dream is that everyone who dreams it has the chance to realize it.

Opo, this might come as a surprise to some, but becoming rich here in the Land of the Long White Cloud, although not impossible is more difficult compared to the USA. Hence I’ve never equated the NZ dream with becoming rich.

What NZ dream offers is modern living just like in America, comfortable, but not extravagant. A stress free, simple and more laid-back lifestyle. Uncomplicated. Para ka lang nagbabakasyon. Exactly, the way I described my Filipino dream above.

Masaya ako na malungkot.

Happy ako because the way things are progressing in my life, I’m close to seeing my dream to fulfillment. Then while waiting for retirement, I can dream of some luxuries, such as a house by the beach, or a boat maybe. It is a good feeling to dream. And an even better feeling to wake up knowing your dream is within your grasp.

Pero malungkot din ako. I’m saddened because I know people back home, close friends even, driven by despair and mounting difficuties in life have given up hope and stopped dreaming. They used to be dreamers like me, but slowly their Filipino dream evaporated to become just that, a dream, an impossible dream.

I want to scream at them and tell them not to lose hope. To do something rather than just blaming others or the country for lost opportunities. To tell them not to stop dreaming. A bright future, starts with a dream, a vision of tomorrow. Then one has to work on it...TODAY.

  • Ka Uro,
Your blog is a real source of good advices and inspiration to people. I think if we keep on encouraging people this way the world would be a better place to live in for all. Keep it up, kabayan!

As always, a very nice blog... keep it comin'... naging fan mo na yata ako, always looking forward to your next post.

  • Hi Ka Uro,
But I do admit that we've started to situate our dreams elsewhere. Hindi din naman sa wala silang ginagawa: they work very hard to provide for their families. Pero kulang pa din. That such conditions exist, that such conditions make it impossible for even a hardworking individual to achieve a modicum of comfort: yun ang sad diba.

  • Thanks Ka Uro for giving us inspiration and hope. Allow me to share this adaptation of a favorite quote from George Bernard Shaw. It goes... "Many people see things and ask "Why?", but I dreams of things that never were and ask "Why not?"

Thanks again for making my day...

  • raycer and kabayan anonymous,
    thanks for the complements.

    sass,
kakalungkot ngang isipin na kahit anong hard-work gawin ng iba parang enough lang para makaraos. i'm happy for you that as you said you've situated your dreams somewhere. i pray that your dream will come true. however, i'ld also like you to have a fall-back plan just in case things don't fall into place.

    deacs,
that's one of my fave quotes too. is having a personal "stalker" a sign that you've made it? kakatakot naman yata deacs.

It is sad to leave a country for a better future but if you think about history that is how countries are made. Sadder only that they used to come to our country now they leave it.

  • A bright future, starts with a dream, a vision of tomorrow. Then one has to work on it...TODAY.

i think one cannot work on it here in the Philippines. parang mahirap sa ngayon. pero kung pagsusumikapan nang husto at hihingi ng Divine Intervention, makukuha naman.

God Bless you for the inspiration you're sharing.

  • it is interesting for us Americans when we hear of other having an American dream because we have a different notion for that. I have my Filipino dream - which is as simple as yours :) but wouldn't you know that it is harder for me to acquire it than my American dream?

You are fullfilling a New Zealand dream which is the one you and your family have....

    have a nice day...

By Blogger Unknown, at 7:20 AM, May 19, 2005

  • salamat sa lahat ng nagcomment. ang purpose ko lang naman talaga in my post is to make people reflect their situation and the direction where they're going. i don't mind if people agree or not. but from what i've read, most do have simple dreams like me.

banjan, sana matupad ang hangarin mo at ng iyong pamilya na makarating dito. ganoon lang naman talaga, all we can do is try and do our best.

cerridwen, i sensed that you're saying that sometimes it is easer to be rich and yet remain unhappy or not at peace with oneself. mahirap ang dinanas mo but i hope you find happiness. sana naka-recover ka na.

mam sol, good morning mam, present po ako. hindi yata 'great minds', para sa akin 'simple minded' lang ako.

bing, i see your point about how difficult it is to work on your dream today in the Phil. which is exactly the reason why a lot of pinoys left or are leaving. that includes me. i really hope things will get better back home.

lws, gusto ko ang mga ideas mo, very down to earth, simple lang, pero may value ika nga. tulad nung sinabi mong bibili ka ng mga baloons at pamimigay sa mga batang magdadaan sa tapat ng bahay niyo, i like that. only someone with a kind heart will think something like that. o ano, nakuha mo na ba ang winnings mo?

    patrice,
thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment. marami ka pa lang relatives dito. sana you visit them someday. go ahead link me up. link din kita ha?

  • To dream for something BIG inspires us to try even harder in life. To realize it brings us to the stage of Fruition when we finally receive it.

However, no matter how much we aim and work for something, not everyone is rightfully commensurated for their efforts. Often, there are many limitations and trials along the way. Even with the thought that all things being equal, some people will emerge to seem more blessed than others. And yet, this does not mean that the blessed ones
deserve more than the hapless ones coz they have both done their best.

On occassions when we fail inspite of everything good that we've done, we must rely on the fact that God's love and His power will fill up all our inadequacies and our reward is reserved for us in the Eternal Life. What we have earned here will never be in vain if we trust in Him.

Life on earth is temporary, it is the Divine Life that we should starting building for. Only then, we will be able to achieve our ultimate dreams and make them realities and that state will NOT be a temporary bliss but eternal.

  • medyo nawala ako for one month and half kasi nagbakasyon ako sa pinas after 2 years I'm presently in UK working, In my experience, I lived and grew-up in Tondo,I felt bad dun sa mga kaibigan ko and even some relatives na hindi makabot ng pangarap, I feel the same thing as you are, As I thank God for this chance nagpapaaral ako ng pamangkin para naman maabot din niya ung pangarap niya sa buhay.

  • I used to really dream big pero I always get my hopes up and watch them fall every time. I know the only way to do it is to get out of this country.
