Using Your GSM Cellphone in NZ
In NZ, there are only two cellphone networks -- Vodafone and Telecom. Of these two, Vodafone seems to be more popular because of its wider coverage and international support. Vodafone prepay connection packs at $35 each can be bought from any Vodafone outlet. It includes a SIM2 card for your GSM handset and $5 worth of airtime loaded. In addition you can also get $10 extra airtime by answering a questionnaire.
TXT, PXT and Video PXT cost $0.20 to send locally or anywhere in the world. Vodafone to Vodafone or Vodafone to local landline calls cost $0.49/min. All others including international calls cost $1.39/min.
If you run out of credit and need to use your phone you can get a Prepay IOU $2 top-up by simply texting IOU to 468. In other words utang muna ng $2. Quite convenient especially in case of emergency. The next time you top-up your mobile Vodafone will deduct $2 from the amount of the top-up. Recharge cards are sold at $20 each. Airtime is valid for 365 days.

Oh, nice to know naman sa mga info about cell phones dyaan at Pinas, Ka Uro. My husband nga eh has been looking around for a good cellphone to get, kasi parang halos lahat may 2 year contract, but he doesn't like that. Too long na yan at a rip off kasi mahal din i-cancel. We had one but we returned it na muna, to give us time to look further into getting one we like. Anyway, thanks for sharing your input about cellphones.

hello ka uro. i've been reading your blog for quite some time now pero ngayon lang ako nag-post ng comment. so nde na ako lurker mode ngayon. :)
anyway, what interests me about your posts are mostly those on life in NZ. you see, my hubby & i also have plans of migrating & NZ is our no. 1 choice. we've already passed the EOI stage. sana kami din, like you & ur family, would be given the opportunity to live there. i'd definitely want to start having kids of our own na andiyan na.
for now, i'm just content with reading fellow Pinoy bloggers who are based abroad.

Hey KU! how timely ;) my husband just got a "new" phone (secondhand na bagu-bagong modelo! ;)) and was wondering if it would be useful in NZ. I checked the prices of cellphones in NZ via internet---mas mahal ata by 20% at least. anyway, magkano ang tawag diyan to Pinas? dito ata US$20cents/minute (but i could be wrong!)
as for SMART outsmarting us, hindi lang smart yun... i dare say lahat ng telecom trying to outsmart us. maiiksi ang validity periods ng callcards so napipilitang ubusin ang load ng card para "masulit" kahit di naman masyadong kelangan gamitin, and they charge by the minute instead of per second unlike in HK or US...siguro kulang din ang consumer protection dito sa atin kaya ganun.

Ka Uro,
I have been reading your blogs for the past 4 days and i find it very informative. It seems like my day is not complete without reading your blogs. I suggest if you can blog about salary schemes and min wage etc. :) thanks again and god bless!

pao,
sass,

rammy,
thank you for the compliments. i'll think about your suggestion. mag-research muna ako.

SMART---outsmarting us, oo nga eh...halos lahat yata silang telecom company eh ganon...I'm one of the victim....
Napansin mo pa yun???
By Flex J!, at 4:33 PM, October 19, 2005
Sa Singapore kasi both outgoing and incoming calls may charge.
By Anonymous, at 6:14 PM, October 19, 2005
flex j,
tonyo,
yap libre and incoming calls. pag weekend libre ang txt sa vodaphone. kahit nga nung nasa Aussie kami libre pa rin ang txt pag weekend. galing no?

Yan ang di ginagawa ng Globe and Smart. If I remember right, yung PHP300 Globe pre-paid card ko, good for three months lang noon.

Ka Uro,
Sorry unrelated ang tanong, pero I would like to ask kung paano mo nagawa na maging JPEG file ang computer screen mo? I am referring to a JPEG file doon sa isang very recent post mo na in-erase mo after a few days, dahil delicate yata ang topic.

This must be true, the local cellphone companies fare so bad in terms of service and customer satisfaction. Maybe it's time that our government should do something about this.
